New Jersey auto insurance customers can choose between a standard or basic policy when buying coverage. The standard policy includes several coverage options allows customers to buy a higher level of protection if they wish. The basic option meets the minimum level of coverage required by the state, but the benefits are limited.
A customer who chooses the standard policy can get between $15,000-$250,000 in bodily injury liability coverage to pay for the damages suffered by a single person hurt in an accident and $30,000-$500,000 to pay for the medical bills, rehabilitation expenses and lost wages incurred by all victims of the same accident. Bodily injury liability coverage also pays for funeral expenses if the accident resulted in one or more fatalities.
Property damage liability coverage ranging from $5,000-$100,000 is available under this coverage option. This policy provision pays for the cost of repairing the other driver’s vehicle after an accident, as well as repairs to sign posts, light stands and mail boxes.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage protects the policyholder and the occupants of his or her car. It pays for medical bills after an accident. Under the standard plan policy limits ranging from $15,000-$250,000 per person are available.
Customers who choose the basic policy option can buy $10,000 in bodily injury liability coverage as an option. Property damage coverage of $5,000 per accident is included, along with $15,000 in PIP.
