Manitoba Car Insurance and Moving Out of Province

If you are planning to move in the near future, be sure to put changing your Manitoba car insurance to one for your new province on To Do list. It’s a good idea to contact the provincial agency responsible for issuing drivers’ licenses in your new home province to find out whether your Manitoba license and registration will be recognized after the move and how long you have to switch to a new one.

Before you pack up your belongings and hit the road, there are a couple of items you need to get that may help you save on your car insurance when you get to your new home. Ask Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) to send you a Claims Experience Letter. This document sets out whether you have made any claims against your insurance policy while living in the province. Being able to prove that you have a clean record will help you get better rates from your new insurer after the move. Getting a copy of your driver’s abstract is also a good idea before the move, since some prospective employers will ask to see it.

Once you have moved and registered your vehicle in your new province, you will need to provide a copy of the registration document to MPI and ask the agency to cancel your Manitoba registration. You will also need to request that your MPI car insurance policy be cancelled at that time.
