How to Verify Auto Insurance Coverage

A company may need to verify auto insurance coverage for an employee who is required to drive a company vehicle as part of his or her job duties. To confirm that auto insurance coverage is currently in effect, start by asking to see the driver’s insurance card. He or she should be carrying it in the vehicle, since it must be produced on request by a police officer during a traffic stop or when an accident occurs. Take a copy of it or make note of the following information:

  • Name and address of insured driver
  • Phone number
  • Name of insurance company
  • Policy number
  • Expiration date of the policy

A contact number for the insurance provider should also be indicated on the card. Call the insurance company and provide the information retrieved from the card. The company representative should be able to confirm whether the insurance policy is in force.

Taking the time to verify auto insurance coverage is in force should be part of the hiring process for employers operating a fleet of vehicles. It only takes a few minutes to make sure that everyone on the job has proper coverage in place. For an extra degree of professional security, make a point of verifying coverage at least once a year since lapses in this necessary protection can and do occur from time to time.
