Car Insurance in Massachusetts

Until very recently, car insurance quotes obtained in Massachusetts were strictly controlled by state law and in turn, this had a direct effect on the way carriers were allowed to charge their clients. Because prices were predetermined, there was little flexibility in the way insurance was offered and finding an affordable policy was particularly difficult. Individual levels of coverage were all charged at the same rate irrespective of which insurer provided the original auto insurance quotes and prices remained artificially high for a number of years.

The recent changes in state law has now seen Massachusetts become a more competitive environment for auto insurance companies and this inevitably means that consumers are now able to secure better deals. However, the difference in the way that prices are governed has no effect on the previous mandatory minimum insurance requirements and motorists who fail to maintain a policy can still be penalized heavily.

If a motorist is found to be driving without adequate insurance, there are still a number of stringent punishments that can be enforced. When obtaining car insurance quotes, the following levels of coverage must be purchased:

  • $20,000 of bodily injury liability per person
  • $40,000 of bodily injury liability per accident
  • $5,000 of property damage liability
  • Personal injury protection

Personal injury protection will usually cover medical costs accrued due injuries sustained in a road traffic accident up to the value of $8,000. It will also cover loss of earnings if the accident leaves the policyholder unable to work, irrespective of who was deemed to be at fault when the incident actually occurred.
